Showing the Heavy Horse

Author(s): Edward Hart

Pets & Animals

The heavy horse, whether shown singly or harnessed in a team of six, is the most popular exhibit on the modern show scene. In this book, Edward Hart condenses the experiences of leading exhibitors in the art of training, preparing and exhibiting heavy horses and in the choice, preparation and maintenance of vehicles and harness. Showing should be fun, and all the fun of the summer show scene is to be found in these pages. As well as the main in-hand and turnout classes, the book focuses on innovations such as ridden classes and obstacle driving, and also traditional pursuits such as ploughing matches and town parades. Emphasis is also placed on the interest and pleasure to be derived from exploring the traditional agricultural implements, horse brasses and decorations, and recording the buzz and colour of the heavy horse scene through the medium of photography. Thus, in addition to providing a wealth of information and advice, "Showing the Heavy Horse" will add enormously to the sheer pleasure of exhibitor and spectator alike. It will be an enthralling read for both the expert and the newcomer to the world of the heavy horse.

Product Information

Edward Hart is an all-round countryman who has an abiding interest in horses, and particularly in the working animals amongst which he grew up. He learnt to plough with them during his farm-worker days, and considers himself lucky to have known so many men steeped in horse lore. His interest in showing developed during the heavy horse revival in the 1970s, after their near-extinction during the 1960s. He became the first co-editor of Heavy Horse and Driving in 1976, and then took over as heavy horse correspondent for Horse and Hound. He has written for Heavy Horse World since its inception in 1987. He regularly attends the major shows, meeting the top practitioners of driving, preparation and presentation, and general heavy horse management. Advice and information gleaned from many such people is included in these pages. A keen advocate of protecting the environment, he makes the point that horses are 'environmentally friendly', and that the showing of these noble animals is a constant inspiration to their wider use.
