During those 150 years, the library survived a shipwreck, fires and destruction by water. It became a treasure house, including rare books and artworks, and has been prized by members.

Dr John E. Martin is the Parliamentary Historian. He is involved in a range of activities associated with the History and Heritage programme within Parliament, researching and writing historical material, recording oral histories, collecting relevant history and heritage items and preparing displays. He wrote The House: New Zealand's House of Representatives 1854-2004 for the 150th anniversary of Parliament in New Zealand and has published widely on our political and social history.
