DescriptionQuintus Horatius Flaccus - Horace, as he is known- is one of the great poets of all time, with a profound and lasting influence on Western literature. His witty, lusty and sometimes satirical poetry comes to life in this sensitive and vivid new translation. Author descriptionA self-confessed ‘closet classicist’, Dr Colin Anderson is a senior lecturer in European Languages and Translation Studies at Massey University, New Zealand. His interest in Latin literature began as a student in the 1960s and has continued as a hobby ever since. Reading Horace’s timeless poetry on the bus to work each day inspired Colin to translate the Odes into metres that reproduce the rhythms and musicality of the originals. Thus began ‘Horace on the bus’, which won a prize in the 2007 international John Dryden Literary Translation Competition, and became the basis of this book. |
